Got a phonecall today. This guy I’ve never heard of (who, according to him, was apparently in my college class), who works for a radio station I’ve never heard of, is trying to put a series of shows together about the history of asian movies – chinese, korean, japanese, the works. He asked me – if I’m interested – to put together a plan for the series, and of course to be the on the air expert.

I said, sure, it sounds interesting – how does the pay looks like?

There was a moment of silence on the other end, and than the guy started to explain to me, with obvious, amused shock in his voice, that he pictured me doing the whole thing totally free.

I advised him to rethink his position, and *then* contact me. I’m pretty sure I’m not going to ever hear from him again. It’s just too bad I could not send him the link to this lovely video, where Harlan Ellison talks about paying the writer. Granted, in this case I would not have written something original, only plan out a series of shows and talk my ass off, but still… Work is work.
